Myths about hypnotherapy

Myth: I will lose control

You are still conscious, still rational, still you. I cannot make you dance like a chicken (why would I anyway?!) or share information you do not want to share. You are fully empowered and in control. There is no “going under” like with anesthesia. If you’d like to know what it feels like, find a meditation online and after two minutes, start talking out loud. This is very similar to what the experience will be like. You will also have recall of the session.

Myth: Hypnosis is entertainment

Hypnosis is very much real. We can call it guided meditation if the wording is more comfortable. Either way, the practice is being increasingly adopted in the medical community as improving outcomes in areas of anxiety, PTSD, pain management, asthma, and phobias, among others. Here is a study in the U.S. using hypnotherapy for overactive bladder and a comprehensive review of hypnosis in a clinical setting from the Mayo Clinic.

Myth: Hypnosis is Sleeping

You are very much awake and an active participant in the session. You will just be more relaxed and having a conversation from that calm place. You will still feel emotions, and the wonderful thing is that experiencing emotions from this state often heals them at their root cause.
